Diffusion and Osmosis

Hypothesis
If osmosis and diffusion is true then when we put the eggs in the hypertonic and hypotonic solutions they will either grow or shrink. The eggs will become heavier or lighter depending on the solution it goes in. This happens because diffusion causes molecules to even throughout high and low concentration areas. Osmosis will allow the molecules to pass through the cell membrane for diffusion to occur.


Materials
Corn Syrup 4 Eggs
Water Scale
Salt 3 Beakers
Vinegar Food Colouring
(these materials are shown in the figures above)

Procedure
1. Placed eggs in vinegar for 3 days until there is no longer a shell
2. We weighed all the eggs after being taken out of the vinegar and recorded the weight
3. We filled 3 beakers; one with corn syrup, one with water, and one with salt water
4. We put egg 1 in corn syrup, egg 2 in water, and egg 3 in salt water (figure 2)
5. We let it sit for a few hours
6. We then took them out and weighed them, All there mass's changed
7. Next they got placed in different solutions, egg 1 went in water, egg 2 sat in the air, and egg 3 went in corn syrup
8. They sat for a few hours
9. We took them out and weighed them again
10. Most of there mass's changed again

Eggs were removed from vinegar and have no shell (figure 1). They appear larger than a regular egg, which has a mass of 65g. The eggs went into the 3 beakers and were left to sit. Egg 1 had a mass change of 50g going into the corn syrup. We put it back in water where it regained 47g. Egg 2 went into water and gained 4g, then sat in the air and the weight didn't change. Egg 3 went into salt water where it gained 1g, then went into corn syrup where it's weight decreased to 74g.

Conclusion
In this experiment we proved that osmosis and diffusion is true. The molecules passed through the cell membrane and went from the high concentration area to the low concentration area. That is what diffusion and osmosis is.

Relevance
The reason osmosis keeps us alive is allowing water and nutrience molecules to mass through the cell membrane. Therefore keeping us healthy.
